AV Events

Our guest speaker and panel events are on hold while we continue to search for a new volunteer Events Coordinator.

We are hoping to run more events in the future, and as soon as we have further information, we will share this with our community.

To be included in upcoming emails about events, we invite you to add your name to our AV Mailing List.

About AV events

Our AV Events, one of our most popular activities, provide an opportunity for our community to come together as a whole for an evening or an afternoon either in person or via Zoom. Typically held online, our guest speaker and community events allow professionals and experts in a range of topics important to our community to share their personal and professional experiences, and are designed to inspire, share information, and promote acceptance and understanding of Aspergers and autism.

All AV members have access to tickets for themselves and one additional person at a discounted member rate. Find out more about AV membership on our Become an AV Member page.

If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact our AV admin team.

Join Our Teens Work Know-How Program: Your Opportunity to Shine

Are you or someone you know a student, and ready to be supported in taking the next step towards transitioning from School into the Workforce? We’re thrilled to invite you to express your early interest in our Teens Work Know-How Program, running in 2026. This will allow us to showcase community need.

This early application will help us in proactively managing our program to ensure its the best it can be for all, and in our grant applications and advocacy work. Your early efforts are supporting us to keep this program funded, and our community supported.

Please see below possible dates for the 2026 program!

    Why This Program Matters

Our Teens Work Know-How Program is more than just a series of workshops—it’s a community-driven initiative designed to empower neurodiverse teens with the skills and confidence they need to thrive in the workplace. Here’s why this program is crucial:

    • Empowering Futures: We provide the tools and support to help neurodiverse teens navigate the professional world with confidence. This program is tailored to highlight and harness their unique strengths.

    • Building Stronger Communities: By focusing on individual abilities and fostering an inclusive environment, we are building a community where everyone can contribute and succeed.  Jacob, our Program Manager, knows firsthand, "a lot of learning for our cohort is helping them cut through the jargon, explaining the first principles, the Why behind the actions taken, and being able to understand and mentor their curiosity".

    • Advocating for Change: Your involvement helps us collect valuable data that showcases the impact and ROI of neurodiverse talent, how educators and employers can best support, harness and train your talents, and helping all parties understand how the spectrum may speak in a place of work.

This evidence is critical for securing future funding and expanding our reach and services to community, and more importantly, employers are businesses, this helps us showcase with tangible data, supported by our industry stakeholders, the long-term results of employing our community. The earlier our cohort understand themselves, their place on the spectrum, only then can they support, or be supported

    Eligibility Criteria

To participate in the Teens Work Know-How Program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

    • Age: Must be within the legal working age of 15- 18 by the time the program round starts.
    • School Enrollment: Must be enrolled in secondary school or through the Home Schooling Network (HEN).
    • Commitment: Must be able to meet the scheduled requirements of the program.
    • School Support: Must have the school’s knowledge and signature for work experience placement to be included as part of the participant's school VET (Vocational Education and Training) learning.

How Your Participation Makes a Difference

    1. Early Access: By expressing your interest now, you’ll be prioritized for onboarding in our final round of the current grant extension in 2026.
    2. Future Notifications: You’ll be among the first to hear about additional funding and new programs from 2025-2026 if we receive further funding.
    3. Program Development: Your early application helps us understand community needs and develop diverse program options, including school curriculum integration, holiday programs, and/ or online courses.

    Real Stories, Real Impact

Our program isn’t just about skills; it’s about changing lives. Here is a story from our Team that highlight the social value of our work:

    • Community Voices: One of our participants, "Emma", shared how the program helped her build confidence in a way that traditional approaches in school didn’t. She learned to speak to her unique strengths to feel more confident in job interviews and the transition process, understanding that what made her a leader in her basket ball team, and her love for sport, is why she is fit for the role; not because of her Resume. This participant then went off to work in a sports store at DFO.

Another student, "Samantha" also suffered from stress related/undiagnosed tics, something that Jacob, due to his Tourette Syndrome understood the self consciousness of. Both of them, not being around many other "Tickers" connected, this report, this shared understanding, allowed for Sam to take of the mask, to transition from the timid shy girl who came in, feeling like her ticks would make her unable to achieve her goals, to one of the stand out students in our cohort. This preconceived mindset was brought to a halt; when she saw someone, doing exactly what she felted would never be possible. That reprograming of her believes, through seeing it with their own eyes, and being understood, was shared to be more impactful then any information, and a deeply impactful moment for both, and our program so far.

    Our ILC Commitment

Since 2019, supported by an ILC grant, we’ve faced challenges but remain dedicated to our mission; to deliver the Teens Work Know-How Program.

Despite the hurdles, including those from COVID-19, we’ve persevered, and pivoted through these challenges with the support of our community and stakeholders.
We continued to focus on leading by example, employing more lived experience team members, and exceeding past outcomes.

Your participation is key to our success. It allows us to:

    • Showcase Unique Talents: Highlight the skills and abilities of neurodiverse teens.
    • Secure Essential Funding: Use collected data to advocate for extended or new grants.
    • Expand Our Offerings: Create more programs tailored to various needs and preferences.

        The Late Discovered Group: May

        - Online Meeting

        About the Late Discovered Group

This peer support group is a welcoming space for Autistic adults who were diagnosed later in life or discovered their Autism on their own. Many of us grew up feeling “different” without having the language or support to understand why. This group exists to honour those experiences and offer connection, validation, and community with others who truly get it.

Together, we share stories, reflect on identity, unlearn harmful narratives, and explore what Autism means for us now—in relationships, work, mental health, and everyday life. There’s no pressure to mask, explain yourself, or have everything figured out. You can listen, talk, stim, ramble, be quiet, laugh, or process at your own pace. This is a judgment-free, neurodiversity-affirming space where late discovery is not a deficit, but a meaningful part of your story.

The Late Discovered Group is a parent/carer free zone - parents/carers of attendees are invited to join our separate Parents & Carers Group instead. (Autistic adults who are also parents or carers are most welcome.)

This meeting will be online via Zoom. We have included more information about Zoom and how to access the meeting below.

        Book Club: May

        About the AV Book Club

If you enjoy reading fiction for adults and would like to have an incentive to read more, expand your reading list, and to meet with others to share your thoughts and insights and to hear others' perspectives, consider joining the AV Book Club for your next literary adventure. We read and discuss work by autistic authors as well as non-autistic authors.

This month, we will discuss:  All the Little Bird-Hearts by Viktoria Lloyd-Barlow

Sunday lives with her sixteen-year-old daughter Dolly in the same house she has lived in all her life. She does things differently from other people, but mostly it works. On her "quiet days" she must eat only white foods. For social situations, she has her etiquette handbook, and for solace her beloved treasury of Sicilian folklore. But the one thing very much out of her control is Dolly – beautiful, headstrong Dolly who is on the cusp of leaving home.

Into this carefully ordered life step Vita and Rollo, a glamorous London couple who move in next door, disarm Sunday with their wit and charm, and proceed to deliciously break just about every rule in her etiquette manual. Soon the two families are in and out of each other’s houses, and Sunday feels loved and accepted like never before. But beneath Vita and Rollo's charm and wealth there is something else, something darker. And Sunday has something that Vita has always wanted for herself, a beautiful, clever daughter of her own.

AV Career Network · Touchstone Meeting · Session 2 of 9

        Thursday 28 May 2026 · 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM AEST · Online via Zoom

Free for AV members · $10 for non-members

A CV can only tell part of the story. For many Autistic people, it tells very little of it. This Touchstone asks the community to name the gap between what they can actually do and how they've been assessed on paper — and to explore what it would mean to be genuinely evaluated on capability, not performance.

We look at the moments where the gap showed up most clearly: interviews that missed the point, applications that couldn't capture what you brought, roles you excelled at that your CV never predicted.

        This month's podcast anchor

This Touchstone is built around the AV World of Work episode You're More Capable Than Your CV Shows. Listening before attending enriches the conversation significantly. Listen on Apple Podcasts or search AV World of Work on Spotify, YouTube, Amazon Music or your preferred podcast app.

        This month's guest

        • Sandra Thom-Jones — Autistic Professor · Author of Autistics at Work (MUP 2025) and Autistics in Academia (Cambridge 2025) · Former Pro Vice-Chancellor, Australian Catholic University

        How the session runs

        • 5:45 PM — Room opens early. Settle in, cameras optional. Unrecorded.
        • 6:00 – 6:10 PM — Formal welcome, Acknowledgement of Country, Group Mindsets. Unrecorded.
        • 6:10 – 7:00 PM — Facilitated conversation with Xavier Gunn. AI capture begins after the formal welcome.
        • 7:00 – 7:10 PM — Soft close. Open floor, one contribution each. Unrecorded.

This session uses AI-assisted capture — not a video recording. AI capture is not published as footage. Jacob Alan Kness (Programs Manager, Autism Valued) will name the capture window clearly when it starts and stops.

The 3+3 framework — come prepared with your own three

        • 1 question to raise verbally — something you want the group to sit with and discuss live
        • 1 comment or open thought for the Zoom chat — a reflection or observation you want in the room
        • 1 statement or reflection to post in our LinkedIn group after the session — to seed the ongoing community conversation

        Continue the conversation

The conversation doesn't stop when the Zoom call ends. Join our AV Career Network LinkedIn group to keep reflecting, share resources, and expand on what was discussed each month.

        Acknowledgement of Country

Autism Valued acknowledges the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the land on which we meet — the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung People of the mighty Kulin Nation. We pay our respects to Elders past and present. Always was, always will be, Aboriginal land.

        THE GROUP MINDSETS

Touchstone Meetings operate under six shared mindsets, agreed by the community. Facilitators are encouraged to name these briefly at the start of each session.

        Mindset

        Value

        What it means in practice

        Positive

We see possibilities, strengths, and talents.

Lead with what people can do,
        not what they can't.

        Growth

We pursue goals through learning and share that knowledge — without judgement.

It's okay not to have answers. It's okay
        to change your mind.

        Empowerment

We listen, support, and encourage others to grow.

Your role is to open doors,
not tell people which one to choose.

        Empathy

We try to understand another's situation and help, if asked.

You don't need to have lived it to
        honour it.

        Trust

We value the privacy and confidentiality of others.

        What's shared in the room
        stays in the room.

        Respect

We acknowledge the wishes and rights of others.

        Including respecting someone's need
        for space or silence.

        Inclusion

We make all peers feel welcome and understood.

        Actively, not just passively.

        CODES OF CONDUCT

These apply to all online Touchstone sessions. Facilitators name them briefly at the start, and can return to them if needed during the session.

        CODE

        DETAIL

        Brevity

        Keep answers under 2 minutes.
Succinct communication is a professional skill

and it creates space for others.

        Attentiveness

        Wait your turn. Avoid interrupting.
When not speaking, be present for whoever is.

        Language

        Use appropriate, professional language throughout.

        Focus

Keep discussion on topic. Refrain from oversharing.
This is a professional networking group.

        Respect

Be inclusive and respectful to all members at all times.

        Comfort

Turn your camera or mic on or off as feels comfortable.
        Consider others' sensory needs.

        Accessibility

The Zoom chat function is always available for those who prefer
        written participation.

          The intent

Not to speak about the community
          —but to think with it

And to ensure what we build reflects real experience, not assumptions.

          What happens with the insights

The reflections, patterns, and themes raised in these sessions are captured and reviewed to help inform:

          • Future podcast episodes and direction
          • Job Seeker Network and program design
          • Advocacy and sector conversations
          • Practical tools and resources for the community

             Roadmap Series

            Module 03 - Energy, Capacity & Resilience

            Energy, Capacity & Resilience

Sustainable work starts with understanding your own energy system. In this session, we explore why capacity differs across people, how to identify your personal peaks and limits, and how to design a working week that you can actually repeat — without burning out.

Many autistic adults have spent years trying to meet workplace demands that weren't designed with them in mind. This session shifts the focus. Rather than asking how to push through, we ask: what does a working life look like when it's built around your actual system?

Module 3 introduces the concept of capacity planning — a practical, evidence-based framework for understanding your energy, identifying what drains it, and designing conditions that support your best and most sustainable work.

            In this session we explore:

            • Why capacity differences are neurological, not a reflection of effort or character
            • The four key energy drains that affect many autistic workers in neurotypical workplaces
            • How to identify your personal energy peaks and low-capacity periods
            • The difference between your sustainable capacity and your maximum — and why that distinction matters
            • Workplace adjustments as professional tools, not special treatment
            • The ongoing cost of masking, and strategies to reduce it over time
            • How to design a working week you can sustain across months and years

            Meeting Details

Our meetings are currently held online via Zoom on the last Friday of every month.

Participants gain access to a 09 module self-paced learning series, alongside monthly Job Seeker Meetings that provide space for reflection, questions, and connection regardless of which module someone is currently engaging with.

The new program introduces a clearer structure with monthly modules, practical worksheets, and a dedicated facilitator who is an Careers Practitioner Specialising in Neurodiversity and Disability Employment Supports.

This means the program now combines two things that matter deeply to Autism Valued:

            • Professional career development expertise
Lived experience leadership from within our community

            In this session we explore:

            • Why capacity differences are neurological, not a reflection of effort or character
            • The four key energy drains that affect many autistic workers in neurotypical workplaces
            • How to identify your personal energy peaks and low-capacity periods
            • The difference between your sustainable capacity and your maximum — and why that distinction matters
            • Workplace adjustments as professional tools, not special treatment
            • The ongoing cost of masking, and strategies to reduce it over time
            • How to design a working week you can sustain across months and years

            What you'll walk away with:

A completed Capacity Plan — Portfolio Section 3 — including your energy profile, accommodation list, masking inventory, and sustainable week summary. This section feeds directly into the modules that follow, including workplace navigation and your application kit.

Who this is for: Autistic adults exploring, preparing for, or returning to employment. No formal diagnosis is required to attend or participate.

Part of the 9-module Job-Seeker Roadmap. Builds on Module 2: Strengths and Values.

All AV facilitators and volunteers are peers of their group participants and hold a valid Working with Children Check. If you know a child whom could benefit from our sessions, they must be registered by the parents membership, and/ or accompanied by an adult.

            Cost and Membership Information

We suggest reading the Parents' Guide to Discord Blog before joining for the first time.

                        Book Club: July

                        About the AV Book Club

If you enjoy reading fiction for adults and would like to have an incentive to read more, expand your reading list, and to meet with others to share your thoughts and insights and to hear others' perspectives, consider joining the AV Book Club for your next literary adventure. We read and discuss work by autistic authors as well as non-autistic authors.

This month, we will discuss:   The Outside by Ada Hoffmann

Autistic scientist Yasira Shien has developed a radical new energy drive that could change the future of humanity. But when she activates it, reality warps, destroying the space station and everyone aboard. The AI Gods who rule the galaxy declare her work heretical, and Yasira is abducted by their agents. Instead of simply executing her, they offer mercy – if she’ll help them hunt down a bigger target: her own mysterious, vanished mentor. With her homeworld’s fate in the balance, Yasira must choose who to trust: the gods and their ruthless post-human angels, or the rebel scientist whose unorthodox mathematics could turn her world inside out.

                          The Late Discovered Group: September

This month, we will discuss:  Foundation: 1 by Isaac Asimov

In September we’ll discuss the first novel in Isaac Asimov's classic science-fiction masterpiece, the Foundation series. For twelve thousand years the Galactic Empire has ruled supreme. Now it is dying. Only Hari Seldon, creator of the revolutionary science of psychohistory, can see into the future – to a dark age of ignorance, barbarism, and warfare that will last thirty thousand years. To preserve knowledge and save humankind, Seldon gathers the best minds in the Empire and brings them to a bleak planet at the edge of the galaxy to serve as a beacon of hope for future generations. He calls his sanctuary the Foundation.

                            Book Club: November

                            About the AV Book Club

If you enjoy reading fiction for adults and would like to have an incentive to read more, expand your reading list, and to meet with others to share your thoughts and insights and to hear others' perspectives, consider joining the AV Book Club for your next literary adventure. We read and discuss work by autistic authors as well as non-autistic authors.

This month, we will discuss:  Middlegame by Seanan McGuire

New York Times bestselling and Alex, Nebula, and Hugo-Award-winning author Seanan McGuire introduces readers to a world of amoral alchemy, shadowy organizations, and impossible cities in this standalone fantasy.

Meet Roger. Skilled with words, languages come easily to him. He instinctively understands how the world works through the power of story. Meet Dodger, his twin. Numbers are her world, her obsession. All she understands, she does so through the power of math. Roger and Dodger aren’t exactly human, though they don’t realise it. They aren’t exactly gods, either. Not entirely. Not yet.

Meet Reed, skilled in the alchemical arts like his progenitor before him. Reed created Dodger and her brother. He’s not their father. Not quite. But he has a plan: to raise the twins to the highest power, to ascend with them and claim their authority as his own. Godhood is attainable. Pray it isn’t attained.
